FAQs about Storage and Shelving Units
Do you have some questions about our storage and shelving stock before you buy? Our team is the best resource for questions about bookcases, consoles, cabinets, and other shelving options. Visit our stores to meet someone who can tell you more about every model. The answers below may help with basic questions about putting your new storage to use.
How do you support a heavy shelf?
Heavy shelves should have support, especially if they will be carrying a heavy load of items, and children and pets in the home may collide with them on occasion. Anchoring shelves to the walls behind them is one effective way to prevent them from being a danger. Make sure that the anchors you use are strong enough to support the combined weight of the shelves and the items on them.
What is the difference between a bookshelf and a bookcase?
Bookcases and bookshelves are related products, but they have some important differences. Bookcases are typically freestanding and use legs or platforms on the floor for support. Bookshelves are usually mounted to walls rather than free-standing and may not include legs (unless decorative).
What is the bookshelf rule?
You may have heard of the “bookshelf rule” in home design. This refers to the practice of lining the heaviest items on the bottom shelves and the lighter objects on top. While this may sound like just a safety tip for managing storage loads, it is founded in good design, too. Starting with heavier items close to the floor and working upward creates a powerful design effect that draws the eye upward.
What are the best storage cabinets for small spaces?
There are a number of storage options that are made to fit into little nooks in the home, whether you need something short and thin, or something that takes more advantage of the height the room has to offer rather than the floor space. Consider consoles, side tables, and bookcases (some of them are very narrow and make excellent storage for other items). Adjustable and mountable storage shelves can bypass any limits on floor space if needed for storage & organization.
